What to Expect During a Hot Air Balloon Ride

If you've ever considered taking a hot air balloon ride, the first thing you should do is become educated about the process.

Most hot air balloon rides take place either right after sunrise or right before sunset. This is because wind conditions are most favorable at these times. Prepare to spend at least three hours on the whole experience. The ride itself will most likely last about an hour, while pre and post flight activities take up the rest of the time.

All equipment will be tested before ever going up in the air. Before you even get to the launch site, the pilot and his or her crew are preparing for the flight. Your pilot will analyze in detail the weather conditions of the day to make sure things are favorable for a balloon flight. After the weather is checked, the balloon is unpacked and stretched out on a tarp to prevent snagging. The propane burner is then attached to the basket, which is on its side. Then, the basket is attached to the balloon itself. The balloon is inflated using motorized fans.

Hot air ballooning is extremely safe, as long as the weather is favorable. Wind, lightning, and the development of thermals can all be dangerous conditions for hot air balloons. The pilot cannot move the balloon horizontally, only vertically. You may wonder how on earth you can move in the horizontal direction you need to go. The pilot understands how wind blows in different directions at different altitudes, and uses this to their advantage to navigate the balloon.

All hot air balloons contain three major parts: The envelope, the burner, and the basket. The envelope is the lightbulb-shaped nylon that people associate with hot air ballooning. The nylon is crafted to be durable and fireproof. The burner is the apparatus that supplies the balloon with hot air. And the basket is where the passengers ride. Baskets are made from strong yet flexible wicker and are guaranteed to safely carry passengers. While aloft, the basket will not tip or sway.

Understanding what is involved in a hot air balloon ride goes a long way in understanding if you want to take one. At least once in a lifetime, everyone should experience the awesome feeling of floating in the air, viewing the gorgeous scenery below!
